Decorating Black Rooms With Brightly Colored Accents

While white walls and bright accents have been on the list of recent trends, a recent poll reported that 74 percent of homeowners enjoy black rooms. That means black walls are in. Just like fashion's Little Black Dress, a room with black walls is undeniably chic in 2014. This post is dedicated to black walls with brightly colored accents.

Black walls read as neutrals and look great paired with whites, yellows, reds, bright blues, corals, and the list goes on and on. Dark walls give colors an extra oomph and will put your brightly colored art, accessories, and furniture in the spotlight.

Even though it is trendy now, bright colors set against black walls has always been a trusted weapon in a designers arsenal. Designer Albert Hadley used it in this 1962 Park Avenue Duplex

We are seeing rooms with a lot more drama and glamour. Dark, moody walls in black can be the perfect backdrop for colorful accents and are now being used to make a statement.

Black is the perfect color to add depth and drama to a room. Adding in bright color pops will bring the fun!

Red is exciting and a good color to pair with black. This red rug throws out a "pop" of color upon entering this black space giving a preview of what is to come.

Living with bold colors like red, bright blues, or citrusy yellows can be difficult. They are intense, saturated colors and their effect can be overwhelming. Black walls can temper your bright, bold colors.

Yellow is high on the list of colors that will beautifully accent a black interior. Use the color thoughtfully and with restraint! While predominately yellow, the colorful ottoman keeps the look from being too "yellow and black" and brings texture to the look.

Blue is another good color to choose for accenting black interiors.

People tend to think you have to go bold when working with black walls. However, softer blue accents pair well too. Again bring in a lovely design on your chairs and other soft furnishings to add interest and bring balance between two strong colors.

Here the faux zebra rug softens the contrast in this black interior with turquois/blue chairs and accessories. It's OK to have contrast but you do want it to please the eye. Find something to run interference between strong saturated colors.

Believe it or not pastel colors will also work well with black interiors. Take your time to choose wisely and make sure you find an anchor for pulling all the colors together cohesively. In this case, the artwork.

While we are discussing artwork, black interiors are fabulous for showing off art. Bright colors are beautiful on black walls as seen in this picture. The art may not be your style but just look at how beautifully these bright colors stand out against the black.

These pretty colors liven up this interior's black walls. At the same time the black walls benefit the accessories by causing the colors to pop.

Sometimes just a black wall with pops of bright color is all you need. Whether all over intensity......

or a bit here and there, color comes alive against black walls.

Eclectic interiors really seem to benefit from black walls and brightly colored accessories.
