Decorate With A Seating Area At The Foot Of The Bed

Ah, the long forgotten space at the foot of the bed. So many of you leave it bare and boring, while some do at least place a bench or trunk there. There is no reason for that space to be scorned and rejected when you can turn it into an elegant, interesting, and useful space. This is one in a series of blog posts that will show you some different ways to make the foot of your bed more appealing.

No matter the size and style of a bedroom, adding a sitting area at the end of your bed will instantly create a cozy spot in which to relax at the end of the day with a good read, a cup of tea and tempting dessert, or some good conversation. After all the bedroom doesn’t have to be only for sleep. The sitting area at the foot of the bed can be a place to unwind without feeling your night has come to an end. Don't forget about mornings! The seating area can also be a space for waking up and greeting the day over coffee or tea.

The following pictures will show you can create a charming and functional space at the end of your bed and hopefully inspire you to step out and try something new.

If you are in the mood to relax a bit but not quite ready for sleep, a seating area at the foot of the bed creates a cozy space separate from the bed.

The bedroom doesn’t have to be only for sleep. Your bedroom should be a place where you can relax in private, and can feature other areas, like a media area, seating areas, or even a small office area.

It doesn't matter if your master suite is large or small, providing an extra bit of seating at the foot of the bed creates a glamorous look as well as a functional space.

Adding a seating area at the foot of the bed gives you the chance to create other lovely focal points instead of just your bed. This is great especially if you have bed that lacks distinctive or interesting features.

When you place a seating area at the foot of the bed you will have the advantage of your bedroom doubling as a sitting room.

I like a seating area where your sofa almost takes the place of a footboard, making the whole bed seem like a larger unit. They have done a masterful job here of creating the look of a large, impressive four poster canopy bed. Not that hard and won't break the bank!

In addition to pleasing aesthetics, a sofa centered seating area at the foot of the bed is a practical element in a bedroom.

It's really nothing new. In fact a seating area at the foot of the bed is a classic look. If you are a collector like me this space is perfect for a fabulous antique settee. However for those craving comfort, today's sofas may lean more in that direction.

The look of the seating area at the foot of your bed can work well with any interior be it frou frou traditional,

casual, rustic elegance,

or with more modern appeal.

Whichever style you choose, a seating area at the foot of the bed will help you to create a retreat...... especially if you have the room for a couple of cozy chairs.

Designer Julie Dodsen has styled the foot of this bed with a lovely mix of an antique French settee and a pair of more modern comfy chairs.

If you will decorate the bed and sofa at the foot with coordinated cushions, the room will acquire a cohesive look.

Here is another example of a sofa placed at the foot of a bed with a full seating area created around it. For me the two tables would have to go as it is a bit too crowded. It is however, a perfect spot to retreat to if you have company or a houseful of children or grandchildren and need some alone time.

Turning the foot of a bed into a seating area is also a great idea if you have an aging parent that has come to live with you.

Restyling your bedroom with a seating arrangement can be fun.

Be creative and make it visually interesting. Attempt something you have always dreamed of doing but just haven't had the courage to try.

Keep in mind that a seating arrangement at the foot of the bed need not always involve a sofa or loveseat. Plus it doesn't require tons of extra space. This is not a huge bedroom. Place a pair of chairs at the end of the bed in lieu of a footboard for a chic, stylish look that also provides the perfect spot for relaxing in the evening or even waking up in the morning with coffee or tea.

Try placing a couple of comfy chairs and a small table at the foot of your bed. This homeowner has chosen to match up the seating area but you can also coordinate your bed coverings and your seating area with multi-pattern and color. In other words you don't have to be matchy matchy.

Having a seating area at the foot of your bed works well in all decorating styles from contemporary to classic antique. To some of us antique chairs can be comfortable as well as lovely. Those with back problems find straight back chairs more preferrable.

Another option for your foot of the bed seating area is a chaise lounge. Here the chairs have been placed at the side of the bed but could also be used at the foot. Just remember that if you intend to arrange them at the side, make sure you chaise can be placed facing the chairs and not away like in this picture. I think is is a much more inviting look. It will depend on the design of the chaise and where the arm is located.

An elegant chaise lounge can still create a cozy reading spot or an intimate space to unwind at the end of the day. I will admit that some are not as comfortable as others. However, that is true of modern chairs and sofas as well.. Just be selective and find one that meets your specific requirement for relaxation.
