Tiled Kitchen Walls......A Look That's In Demand

When it comes to kitchens I like an authentic old world style complete with antiques. I work best amid standing cupboards, work tables, oil paintings and chandeliers. However, I am finding the current trend of tiling walls in the kitchen quite charming and I like the European feel of it all.

If you really want to make a statement in your kitchen, consider tiling "outside of the box". Backsplashes and tile designs for kitchens have changed and the newer trend in kitchens is the fresher option of creating wrap around tile walls. In other words enveloping your kitchen a bit more in tiles rather than using them in the typical backsplash only way.

Backsplash tile now can cover the entire wall from counter to ceiling. And floor to ceiling tile is really trending at present. Plus there are so many other unique and interesting ways you can use tile to give the "heart of the home" a fresh, creative new look.....wow factor promised from guests!

I hope you can take away a few ideas on how to bring personality to your kitchen design through tiled walls whether your style is old world, contemporary, traditional, urban, or farmhouse. Enjoy!

Backsplashes that start from the counter and go all the way up to the ceiling causes the eye to travel upward making kitchen ceilings seem taller and the room feel larger and better proportioned.

Emily Henderson

Designers are recommending the use of floor to ceiling tile as it will give the illusion that a space is larger than it actually is.

Today when it come to using tile in your kitchen "go big or go home" is the designer slogan. Here the backsplash tile has continued onto the empty wall above the bottom cabinets. Taking the tile straight to the ceiling and adding open shelving gives a sleek modern impression to an otherwise traditional style kitchen.

With so many ways to use tile in the kitchen it is no surprise that turning an ordinary kitchen into an extraordinary kitchen can be FUN! I love the white subway tiles used around the window and continuing to the left onto what appears to be a tiled floor to ceiling wall.

Floor to ceiling tiled walls is a huge trend at present.

Classic and simple, subway tile is still holding favored status as there are so many alternatives for creating fabulous kitchen spaces with it. This style tile goes well with both traditional and modern spaces. Just take it all the way to the ceiling now!

The subway tile was created specifically for use in the New York City subway system at the beginning of the 20th century. The tiles covered large expanses because the architects considered them attractive and easy-to-clean.

There are several ways to configure subway tiles on your kitchen walls besides the alternate brick look. I love this herringbone pattern that reaches from counter to ceiling. There are others tile design styles as you will see on the following chart.

Many homeowners are choosing square tiles which are also lovely when used from the counter up.

This kitchen incorporates trendy tiled walls and open shelving which has been around for a couple of years but is not showing any signs of slowing down.

My favorite is the kitchen that just seems to wrap itself around you with it's use of tile on the walls.

This is a cheerful and interesting kitchen because of the way the tile is used as a backsplash and then continues around the door, extending from floor to the wallpaper border at the ceiling.

Here the backsplash, range hood, and range alcove wall have all been tiled. And if that weren't enough a portion of the ceiling has been tiled as well. Now that's commitment to the tiled kitchen.

Paul Massey

Tile wrap around walls look great in a Euro-rustic kitchen and by using open shelves instead of cabinets your kitchen will look more spacious.

Professionals say there is an increased interest in easy to clean surfaces so floor to ceiling subway tile is the perfect solution in the kitchen. Not only does it look beautiful but it is easy to clean. Here, entire walls of the kitchen have been clad in a classic white subway tile.

Extending tile from the floor or countertop to the ceiling can add color, and pattern to a kitchen especially when colored grout is use.

Many say that the kitchen with white subway tiled walls seems too commercial.......but that is just what we are seeing in this fresh, clean design trend.

I think of a restaurant like bistro kitchen when I see tile clad walls like this.

Cost effective and classic, subway tile covered walls are the perfect addition to any style kitchen, especially a Parisian inspired one like this.

Tile IS a major commitment so really give some thought to covering your kitchen walls in it. The good thing is that, even though the look is trendy at the moment, it is a classic look that you won't get tired of in a hurry. Also it should stand the test of time. And wow, it can be so attractive.

Christine Dovey

White subway tiles in classic brick configuration but with a surprise herringbone accent above the range creates a standout design feature.

Applying tile from the floor or countertop to the ceiling can also add much needed texture to a kitchen.

I really do like the old world feel of these tiled kitchens!

Don't forget there are also many beautiful colors to tile your kitchen walls with. Here dark brown counter to ceiling tiles add drama but still produces a warm and charming space.

Colors besides white are really starting to make an appearance on the kitchen décor scene. Soft blue wrap around tile walls evoke timeless elegance.

When the tile reaches all the way up to the ceiling you get a much more finished look. Just tiling the small section above the counter and under the cabinets actually chops the room in two and looks like something is missing.

Patterned tiles, especially if they are used to cover an entire wall, can give your space the appearance of wallpaper.

At present you can have fun with so many creative ways to incorporate the tile enveloped, crisp and classic style into the modern kitchen.

Burgundy Colored Interiors, On Trend and Beautiful

Burgundy, that shade named for the wine from the Burgundy region of France, is a versatile jewel toned red, tinged with deep tones of purple or brown, that is currently being used to create some beautiful interiors. Burgundy is warm, rich and sophisticated. It is also intense and passionate. With the "moody" interior being so popular lately one can certainly see why lovely burgundy has emerged as a design front runner for the current trend.

Sidelined in the "scorned and rejected" area since the 90's, the color burgundy can help in creating some stunning dramatic interiors. If you are from that era, don't look back! I am hoping the images I have collected for you will help you visualize the new burgundy interior. If a bold new update is in you future, consider incorporating burgundy into your vision.

When painting and decorating, it’s critical to bear in mind what emotions specific colors will evoke. This is why it’s so important to choose colors wisely. You might love the color burgundy but will never be satisfied unless you bring the right balance. Here, in this burgundy saturated interior, the lighter chairs, mantle, carpet, and even the books help to keep it from feeling overly intense.

If you decide to paint the walls in burgundy, you can always be safe and choose a light and bright color for the furniture (such as ivory, beige, or greige tones).

Designer, Alex Papachristidis

Burgundy is seen as more serious than most shades of red and a bit short on fun. So it is up to you to make your own fun! Which is exactly what Designer, Alex Papachristidis has done in the exciting and eclectic burgundy interior. By using several colors from the burgundy family, via furnishings and accessories, he has created fun and vitality. The shelved books help to tie it all together. Notice that the book covers are all in nice muted shades. The prettiest color schemes when working with burgundy stays away from bright primary colors.

Dark muted burgundy walls give a room a warm moody feel. You know.......like the feeling you have on rainy days when you just want to choose a book from the shelves, curl up with a warm cup of cocoa or tea, and disappear for awhile.

Unlike red, the burgundy interior rarely creates negative emotions. It is more reserved and introverted and as a warm color encourages feelings of comfort.

However, like red, it can evoke a sensual feel to any room in your home, whether you choose to use burgundy as the main wall color or as an accent color. Burgundy walls are perfect if you are creating a Boho style interior.

The color burgundy also invites a bit of mystery and moody elegance which makes it a good choice for an old world interior.

Paired with shades of yellow and gold the look of a burgundy room becomes elevated and sophisticated in a way we haven’t seen burgundy used in the past. Because of it's brown undertones burgundy works well with almost any warm toned neutral.

Along with yellow furnishings, lighter colored wood flooring also help to brighten.

I love what gold does for burgundy walls!

My back hall and staircase walls are painted burgundy and I have always enjoyed them. Guests always are complimentary of the space.

Burgundy can add a certain sophistication to a home. However, when not executed properly, it can turn an interior gloomy. That is why you have to do your homework before committing to a moody color like burgundy. Oh, but if you do........

See what I mean! This is a beautiful burgundy colored dining room. This color looks great in any room of the house.

Persian carpets will many time have varying shades of burgundy in them. I think it is a good idea to start with one, let it anchor your space and then build your room around it. If you are going for saturated walls try placing the rug on light hardwood or carpet to brighten the room.

The Old World interior is my style, and if it happens to be your passion as well, the color burgundy will be pleasing to you as a neutral background for antiques and the other muted jewel tone colors of the old world. These colors are typically not bright but aged and dark and deep in nature. Burgundy is now considered a colored neutral for these shades.

David and Victoria Beckham

Artwork will emerge against a dark burgundy backdrop like here in the home of David and Victoria Beckham. Even more so if you use metallic frames.

Be sure to install multiple light sources in a dark burgundy interior. Hang lights from the ceiling, mount them to the wall, use sconces. Also use table lamps and even slip a floor lamp behind a sofa.  All these are needed especially in the evenings. The metallic ceiling is also a good idea to help in light reflection.

Success or failure of dark painted interiors can come down to lighting. At night the crystal chandelier and sconces will add sparkle to this burgundy interior. However, to ensure that each part of the room is well lit, a few floor and table lamps would be beneficial.

The color on these walls is a burgundy with an undertone of purple. Besides good lighting and light colored pictures, the use of mirrors is a must to help brighten a moody burgundy space by allowing light from a window (by day) or a chandelier ( by night) to bounce off the reflective surface of the mirror.

This image shows you how to hang the mirror across from a chandelier for best reflection. Also you can see just how lovely touches of black accents can be in burgundy rooms.

One again shades of muted yellow work beautifully with the black Coromandel screen and burgundy walls of this elegant bedroom. The faux leopard prints brings drama.

Designer, Alexa Hampton

I love using pale and muted earth-toned shades of pink and terracotta with burgundy. Throw in gold and ivory to add elegant brightness.

Pale muddy rose damask is perfect against dark burgundy walls. Keep it rosy, you don't want to get too pink!

You can also use blue as a companion color but take your time and find a blue that looks flattering with burgundy......not all of them do. I had a hard time finding images that were truly complementary for this combination. Stick with blue that has gray undertones and you should be safe. Accessorizing will be the key to successfully uniting blue and burgundy.

Select one or two neutral colors, which are known as accent colors, to pull the burgundy and blue room together. Incorporate these shades into your decorative accessories, wall paint, and window treatments.

Your dark burgundy interior will often need a pop of color to brighten things up a bit. Here an arrangement of orange tulips show you how well this color connects with burgundy. Also the light wood table helps to liven up the space.

The muddy burnt orange of the furnishings is perfect for these soft muted burgundy walls. Adding in the gray cushion and pewter colored metallic table while anchoring them to the soft gray floor creates a lovely space. Since  muted dark colors like burgundy have such a plush look themselves, velvet furniture is a good choice.

Another image just to help you see how pretty orange can be when used with burgundy.

The rule that you should not use dark colors like burgundy in small spaces has been outdated for some time now.

roomfortuesday.com

If your goal is to decorate your room beautifully and burgundy is your color of choice, then by all means disregard the "no dark colors in small rooms" rule. A large mirror will help visually expand the space .

Colorful kitchens became a huge trend this year. A move towards burgundy will be perfect of you want to refresh your kitchen and infuse it with instant charisma and drama. All this while still maintaining a traditional look.

Many homeowners are interested in introducing a new color into their all neutral country kitchens. Burgundy is a good choice and the slat board style cupboards promote the vintage theme.

via Pinterest

The color burgundy can be rich and regal but it can also be earthy and here it helps make this kitchen energetic and welcoming. Who wouldn't want to spend time here preparing meals or sitting down to enjoy them.

designmag.fr

I love this elegant modern kitchen with great stone floor, gray cabinets, and burgundy colored kitchen island. A contrasting kitchen island allows you to introduce a dramatic new color like burgundy and makes the kitchen island appear as a separate piece of furniture rather than looking like a another piece of kitchen cabinetry.

Painting with burgundy above a lighter colored dado and chair rail will allow you to be part of the trend without overloading your space. The ivory accessories help bring balance.

Burgundy painted built in cupboards and accent walls will give the same effect.

Since this color carries lots of energy, which can be over stimulating for some people, you may choose to simply add some burgundy furnishings like chairs......

and sofas. This way you can still use your light neutral walls and just use the burgundy to bring in some pizzaz.

In this image bold burgundy colored chairs breathe new life into a light neutral colored space.

Jerry Jacobs Design, Inc.

Elegant burgundy colored velvet sofa and chair paired with important statement art creates a chic refined interior.

If you love this color but can't envision four walls of it, try an on-trend dark floral feature wall with bold burgundy flowers.

Bold and beautiful burgundy can bring a modern difference to any style interior. It may seem challenging, but if you try some of the tips and focus on accessorizing like never before, the results will be worth it all.
