Decorating With Awnings

Awnings were first used by the ancient Egyptian and Syrian civilizations. They are described as "woven mats" that shaded market stalls and homes. Among the most significant awnings in the ancient world was the velarium, the massive complex of retractable shade structures that could be deployed above the seating areas of the Roman Colosseum. In modern times awnings became popular during the first half of the 19th century and became a common feature in the years after the Civil War.

If you want to improve the curb appeal and add a sense of sophistication to the exterior or your home, residential awnings and canopies can provide an inexpensive way to beautify your home and improve the overall value.

Awnings are not just for decoration. These accessories can provide multiple benefits to homeowners. The use of awnings can reduce the electricity used for home cooling by as much as 70 percent. Awnings can protect interior drapes, flooring, and furnishings from fading due to the harmful effects of the sun's rays, all the while lending privacy to those in the house. The key is to put the right style of awning on your house. Hopefully these pictures will help you get an idea of what your home could look like with a brand new awning.

We all know how beautiful awnings are on public buildings. This restaurants elegance is enhanced by their use.

I love striped awnings — these particular ones are outside the Hotel Lancaster in Paris.

In the past awnings, while  playing an important functional role, helped to add visual character to our streetscapes. When you look at  historic photographs of downtowns and neighborhoods with many colorful awnings, it makes today's streets often seem plain and colorless.

In recent years, building owners and others interested in historic buildings have rediscovered awnings.

Awnings offer endless possibilities for enhancing a building's beauty and decor. They add shape, dimension and color, and can be custom-designed to fit any structure's unique character and style.

And of course we are all familiar with Laduree's iconic awning.

Awnings can make particularly strong architectural statements at front entrances and facades.
Custom options for awnings have exploded in the last few decades. New fabrics, topcoatings, color printing and fabric graphics options have made almost anything you can conceive a reality.

With a simple setup, hassle-free maintenance and low installation costs, awnings provide a very respectable return on the initial investment of the homeowner.

Awnings are a great way to add detail and historical accuracy to  a period home.

They are the perfect addition to any residence, adding a fresh, exciting look to your building's outside. Even a small one adds loads of character.

Draw out the architecture of your building over a deck, patio, or backyard space with a custom awning.

The fact that they offer shade and UV protection, outside awnings can actually enhance your existing architecture. Consider installing custom awnings to accent  the most beautiful parts of your architecture.

An awning can add extra drama and impact to any facade. This scalloped metal one proof!

Awnings were a big deal in the old days. I remember my father sold custom awnings as a secondary business. You could even have them removed and stored in the winter and then installed again in the spring.

Despite their history, usefulness, and attractiveness, awnings still face discrimination. Many homeowners are anti-awning because they say that they’re easily faded and torn, making the whole house look shabby. Our window treatments fade in time but we don't stop buying them.....why refrain from using awnings?

Besides,  new materials resemble canvas in appearance and texture but offer greater strength and durability. They dry quickly, thereby reducing damage caused by mildew, contain a UV inhibitor to reduce sunlight damage, and are coated with a thin acrylic layer that repels dirt and resists abrasions.

Copper awnings are always classic!

Not all awnings are fabric. There are many ornate glass and metal styles that will make your entrance look stunning.

It is a must to decorate your exteriors, namely the entrance doors, the windows and the patio area. All these spaces can benefit from the addition of an awning.

Striped awnings are the perennial favorite, hands down.

A great marriage.....awnings and window boxes.

Don't forget interior awnings!!! If you want to change the decor in your bedroom and are willing to try something different, consider putting an awning over a bed. Indoor awnings are inexpensive and relatively easy to make and they are perfect for giving your room a facelift. There are tutorials on  that will walk you through the steps.

Also interior awnings over your windows or doorways are lovely additions. Choose a striped fabric like this crisp black and white for a more classic look.

I love the awnings that use spears in the design.

Decorating With The Barcelona Chair

The Barcelona Chair designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, was originally designed for Germany's entry to the International Exposition of 1929 which was hosted by Barcelona Spain. The two chairs in his design were offered for King Alfonso XIII and his wife Ena to rest comfortably on when visiting the Pavillion.

In ancient Rome the curule chair ( from currus, "chariot") was the seat upon which imperial magistrates were entitled to sit.The form of the Barcelona Chair is thought to have originated from this Roman folding chair and upholstered stool. The Barcelona Chair took the world by storm in 1929 and has become a classic that never goes out of style. It is still in high demand today, especially for the current and stylish Mid-Century Modern style.

Easily mixed in with any style decor from traditional to contemporary, this classic design has become one of the world's most recognizable furniture creations.

This classic masterpiece of furniture is well known as the Barcelona Chair. The greatest thing about the chair is that it can truly be mixed in with any style decor from traditional to contemporary. Here,  juxtaposed with antique classical elements, the Barcelona Chair becomes a work of art.

The Barcelona Chair was manufactured in the US and Europe in limited production from the 1930s to the 1950s. The frame was initially designed to be bolted together, but was redesigned in 1950 using stainless steel, which allowed the frame to be formed by a seamless piece of metal, giving it a smoother appearance. Bovine leather replaced the ivory-colored pigskin which was used for the original pieces.

There are many manufacturers throughout the world making the Barcelona Chair. Knoll is the only company however who can call their chair the "Mies Van Der Rohe Barcelona Chair". Knoll licensed the design directly from Mies Van Der Rohe in the 1950's

Designed in 1930, the Barcelona Daybed features the same simple elegance and upholstery style as the iconic lounge chair

There is something about the Barcelona Chair that allows for the perfect mix of antique and modern.

I love back to back seating areas so this use of the Barcelona Chair is perfection as far as I am concerned.

This lovely room features classic architecture mixed with Mid-Century Modern iconic elements such as the white leather Barcelona Chairs and ottomans, the Arco floor lamp, and the Cherner wooden chairs.

The Barcelona Chair has gone through many changes over the years. This is largely because the chair was not originally made for the mass market. For example the pig skin leather and feather filled cushions were not fit for large scale production.

With its simplistic form and features, this amazing chair brings an artistic feel to homes, offices and public buildings. It is the perfect companion to interesting pieces of art or sculpture.

The sculptural design of the Barcelona Chair makes such an instant impact.

These bold Barcelona Chairs look wonderful in this red lacquered retro style room. The chairs and the animal print are two classics that work well together.

You will find Barcelona Chairs and Daybeds in some of the most stylish interiors in the world. They are perfect here with the fur flooring choice and a striking agate patterned table.

The Barcelona Chair was introduced in 1929. Even so, we tend to think of it's design as Modernist.

I especially like the Barcelona Chair paired with hides or fur.

Dont forget that the Barcelona Chair is also a beautiful addition to an outdoor entertaining area.

Tips for making sure your Barcelona Chair is the real McCoy.

The back cushion is slightly taller than the steel frame and angles with the curvature of the frame. Cushions are made of premium quality, highly resilient urethane foam with down-like Dacron polyester fiberfill. Two distinct, separate cushions that are fully upholstered with 40 individual panels that are cut, hand-welted, and hand-tufted with 24 leather buttons. The frame is made of premium grade 304 bar stock stainless steel that is hand-buffed to a mirror finish. The KnollStudio logo and Mies’ signature are stamped into the leg.Seventeen straps made of belting leather that do not include buckles are attached with aluminum rivets that are concealed when cushions are in place.

Decorating With The Purple/Green Combination

One only needs to walk away from the paint samples in the local home improvement store and simply look to nature for inspirational color combinations for the home. This post features a trendy combination that when done correctly is turning out some pretty incredible interiors. There are examples in nature where the colors purple and green exist beautifully together........ especially in flowers.

Also you'll see purple and green together at the produce section of the grocery store if you are shopping for such vegetables as eggplants, artichokes or cabbages.

Not only do purple and green look good together at the local farmer’s market, they can look simply stunning when used together in your home. Use them in bright, bold, energetic interiors or soften things up with lighter versions that make a room tranquil and relaxing. This color combination can take on many different moods depending on the depth of  purple and green you choose to use.

The purple/green color combination comes and goes and I have never been a huge fan but this combo has me intrigued at present. I think it is because there are so many wonderful patterns and accessories that make it possible to really pull this look together now in a way that has such depth and texture, something this combination needed. Anyway I am all for it today and hope these images inspire you to give purple and green another try.

Emerald green and an amethyst shade of purple conjure a jewel-toned richness that can’t be denied.

Break up a purple accent wall with a pop of green. I works best when they are both done in similar shades.

Soft sage green and plum are calm enough for a restful bedroom. A bedroom is not the room for vibrant shades of purple as they are too energetic to promote peace and quite.

Purple and green can be used in a living room or any other room that needs brights.
Pink-violets and magical magentas are all looking especially fresh and sophisticated today

This current and chic color combination also works well with tradition style. I love the mix of antiques and modern.

This room uses many trendy decorating elements from the purple/green color combo to the chevron designed rug and trellis patterned pillow.

This violet colored desk show just how beautifully purples pop against green backgrounds.

If a room is small, rich bright shades can make it seem boxy so it’s better to chose lighter shades of purple and green.

Both colors can be in rich or pale shades it all depends on the room that needs decorating. The size of a room is important when using this combination. A guest bedroom is a great space to experiment with purple and green.

Purple has the unique ability to be warm and cool depending on what colors it is paired with. This is a fun quality of purple and unlike any other color.

Purple is an extremely energetic color. Rather than a strong purple, opt for more muted shades like soft violet or lilac and pair them with lime green accessories.

I love all the layers of pattern in this room. Orange is a great complementary color for the purple/green combination. That sofa!!!

The color purple hovers between blue and red on the color wheel chart. It can be either warm with red (magenta or cerise) or cool bluish (plum or blue lavender). You could warm up the entire color combination by painting an accent wall in lime green

Because both purple and green have blue in their base, it's helpful to pair them with a warm tone to complement their cool shades. This combination looks wonderful with a bit of yellow, red or pink.

We love purple and green  when it comes to flowers. Why not bring this combination into your home.

Soft sage and plum are calm enough for a restful interior.  Remember light purple equals
 tranquility.......

dark and medium equals drama.

This room takes a modern direction by surrounding the purple and green with the brightest of cool whites.

This room uses alot of white as well with it's greyish green walls and bright, bold purple chairs. A very lovely combination.
